I realised on playing this that developments in both flash and shockwave mean that doing a 3D browser-based version of Portal would be possible too. I'd love to see that..

Okay, so Fruit Bruitlet thinks that World of Datecraft is a sham, and that the pretty people they had on the front page were fakesters. So, being the intrepid type, I signed up to go check them out. Here's a chunk of today's front page (the whole thing won't fit):
It's actually an improvement, you'll be glad to hear: for starters not everyone is pasty-white caucasian types any more, hurrah! And while the variety of humanoids is indeed slightly less concentrated in the category of "facially-symmetrical types", the variety and spice is more broad.
Now for some non-scientific grab-data: 5 of the 18 front-pagers when I looked are female (28%). 5 of the 18 are overweight (28%). Slightly harder to tell due to photo exposure and film type, approx 10 of the 18 look to be white/caucasian (56%), 3 seem to be black/afro-caribbean (17%), or as merkins say, african-american, at least two are of the asian persuasion (11%), one india/asia or .. okay, you get the picture.
It's a mix of happy-looking WoWers of all shapes, colours and sizes - and they're still all normal looking - in fact, better than normal looking, because wouldn't normal-looking in the USA* at least mean 66% overweight and 75% white? Wow, I'm really going down a road with this one, but as gamers are /were stereotypically thought of as overweight, pasty basement-dwellers, it turns out here that gamers break the mould. What a laugh!
Goodbye, gamer stereotype. Hello, gamers dating gamers and having gamer-babies. Watch out, world (of warcraft).
*USA game, USA site: I'm assuming most folk on the front page are americans.
Just got news of SocioTown, a 3D "massively multiplayer online game" (I see only 3D chat from the video, but I'm willing to suspend disbelief) which runs in a browser, assuming you have Shockwave.
I can't see much that's immediately new here, apart from the running-in-a-browser thing; this bit's quite weird, they've broken down Friending into even more categories than usual:
Presumably this bit is secret unto yourself, because if any of your friends ever saw such categorisation, well.. you can imagine.
As usual, there're clothes and items to be bought, people to chat to, and an environment to walk around in. The video doesn't give much else away, other than what seems to be a little music-maker ...? Hard to tell.
Nope, can't see any game elements to this, but maybe they're still being developed.I know, this is old news. But, you know, ahhh. Lovely, if a little stumpy.
Why haven't we got holographic peripherals yet? It's 2007!
