I realised I should probably update everyone on the next few weeks, considering they're going to be nutso. This Saturday is our Yard Sale day, which is hilarious. I feel so American :). I have a yard! I asked him-indoors whether we were supposed to bake cookies and provide coffee, and he gave me a Look. Apparently not.
I'm also selling my nerdy-mage car and my Playstation (feels so wrong). I hope.
The movers arrive next week, in theory. Our stuff goes by ship to London, which means via Cape Horn. I asked the shipper whether my clothes would arrive dry/mould/burrowing-insect-free, after 12 weeks at sea and three climate zone changes, and he put on a reassuring voice but sounded secretly dubious. Whimper. I have tons of new ninja outfits (pirates are so last year), and they can't all go with me on the planes, even though I would be happy to try, but again. The Look.
So, planes. Good thing I bought extra carbon credits, although I know that's no substitute for not flying at all. We leave Friday 17th, whereupon it goes something like this: LA > Melbourne > Cairns > Tokyo > Yokohama > Dalian > Shanghai > Beijing > London, arriving September 16th. I start at my new job on September 17th. Boy is that jetlag going to be entertaining.
Any suggestions on fun, nerdy things to do in those places, particularly in Melbourne, Yokohama, and the three Chinese cities, are welcome! I've never been to China before, I think I've slightly inflated with the excitement.
I'll be blogging and picking up email when I can, but for that month it's probably going to be sketchy. But who cares, right? It's August! You're all on a beach/cruise/other planet anyway. Right?
Heh, you're obviously already back in the European mindset...us Americans don't get the month of August off to be on a beach, cruise, or other planet! We're lucky if we have 2 or 3 weeks vacation for the entire year.

In Melbourne, you could try the Australian Centre for the Moving Image: http://www.acmi.net.au/independent_games_festival_2007.aspx

How about standing in the middle of the road in Beijing and trying to stop a tank?
You might get on the telly.

We had FUN. 30 people milling about our yard at 7:40am - crazy.
