ActiveX makes me inherently unhappy and suspicious: what's it DOING? Wha? Stop creeping around my machine!
However, I'm installing Toontown to have a poke about, and rather than download and install an .exe (and remembering that this game is targeted to littlies), this MMO is installed directly through Internet Explorer.
Downside: requires IE, ugh. Firefox users are blocked. Uses ActiveX, which is creepy. Doesn't ask you where the game should live. Doesn't ask about Direct X, or desktop shortcuts, or whatnot.
Upside: is flaming easy to use! Shows Disney's really thought about its audience. Installation via the browser very comforting. No decisions as to where the game should live, or Direct X installations, or desktop shortcuts required.
I'm pretty impressed. Could do with a 'mute' button though, although I don't suppose kids mind chirpy muzak while they install...
I like toontown

And many years later, the fan-remade version of Toontown Online, Toontown Rewritten, has an official Linux version. TTR can work on FreeBSD (via Wine) quite well despite FBSD's <0.1% market share (but other Toontown flavors like Corporate Clash can't). In short a complete 180 from the ActiveX-based installer.
However, kids these days would rather play newer games like Fortnite or Roblox, and TTR's main users are older people nostalgic for their childhood and played TTO as a child (including myself).
Yes, I do remember the ActiveX installer for Toontown via IE6.
