24 hours of playing Minecraft later, and I have a hut, with a tunnel in it going very, very deep into the ground. I find myself lost, over and over, so I've begun tidying the caverns. Making them square, and adding arty lighting, so I at least know I'm near my tunnel home somehow. I need to figure out floor markers.
So there I am, wondering now, okay, is this it? What does one actually DO in Minecraft once the first-few-nights survival itch is scratched?
Well duh, of course. Then I googled images, at which point, holy shit.
And there's a Minecraft Art museum, to store this stuff.
And I thought I was being nerdy by making a few of my caverns a bit more square...
I think I know what to do, now. The conversation with the SO is not going to go better than yesterday's:
"What are you doing?"
"Tidying my cave."
"Tidying your cave?!"
- Long explanation
- Derisive hooting
- Exasperated hand-wave
- Double entendre on "tidying" and "cave"
- Slamming laptop shut and sighing
- More hooting, this time triumphantly
etc.

You should point your SO to this essay I read a few years ago. :)

just so you don't feel too bad, those screenshots were taken with the creative version (ie no monsters, no dieing, and infinite blocks of all kinds in your inventory)

Not to make you feel bad or anything but you should see the things my 10 year old daughter builds in Minecraft!

Every so often I think: "Ok, now I'm done playing Minecraft for good."
Then I open it up ("just for a minute") and suddenly it's two o'clock in the morning. Yet again.
Hmm, I wonder how practical it would be to use signs as guide markers... I need some directional help myself...

I use doubled up torches to guide my way when I risk getting lost. Signs are great although I wish there were a way to carry them around without losing their content.

Bit late to the party, but I've got a suggestion for markers, at least in caves--use planks. They're immediately recognizable as unnatural--if there's a plank somewhere, it means you put it there.
