Via Virtual Worlds News: (US) Teens and preteens are still heading towards virtual worlds in larger and larger numbers - although much more slowly than the analysts predicted a few years back. Here's eMarketer's chart from a few years ago:
Rapid growth predicted. Revised figures show a much more sedate pace, although still growing:
Children are not included in the second set of figs, so it's not a numbers comparison, just a rate comparison. Slow and steady.
I'm sure the first of many... here's SHIPS, a (er) ships simulator (maybe not quite a game then) built using Google Earth.
In this ship simulation program you get to be the helmsman of your own
fleet of ships. "Ships" will take you past worlds incredible scenery at
a leisurely pace. All you need to play ships is a small Google Earth
Actually they make it very clear that SHIPS is not itself a game, but a proof of concept:
"Ships" is a case study / Technology show piece that demonstrates what
can be achieved with Google Earth. While map data has a tremendous
value for practical purposes, it can also be used as a backdrop for a
range of games.
Cory said to me yesterday, what if you could procedurally generate a 3D game map from a 2D real map, just chuck up some buildings? Which made us wonder, could it be possible to go further, and chuck up actual buildings, maybe using textures from StreetView and similar too?
Just to add to the list of things that seem to fix a scratched disc okay - yes, my L4D disc got a pounding from my xbox - Ecover Non-Scratch Cream Cleaner did mine lovely. L4D safely installed to HD. Whew.
Having said that, you can see the abrasions from the cleaner so I'd go easy with it, super gentle, if you try the same.
Today we are opening the beta of the Left 4 Dead Authoring Tools to the
public. It is available as a free download for all owners of the PC
version of Left 4 Dead, and can be found under the "Tools" tab in Steam.
The L4D Authoring Tools include modified versions of the same tools we used to produce Left 4 Dead.
Using the L4D Authoring Tools, you may create your own campaign maps,
character skins, 3D models, sound effects, and music and load them into
Character skins! (An all-girl team?) 3D models? Holy crap. This is giving me many ideas...
