It's not just WTF backwards, it's a common acronym in gaming meaning "For The Win!". So, for example, after a particularly splendid pillaging, a smelly buccaneer might yell out: "Pirates FTW!"

In the late 1980's, I learned FTW as meaning "F*ck The World". That's the first thing I think when I read it.
