I played this game for the week the demo allowed. you need to register with either Sony Station Account or other like Bigpond (Aust) etc. I tried with Sony and it did not activate my free trial. So i had to use BigPond game thingy.
I have played a variety of Pirates genre games the best being an old one that came with disks and had all the info about actual pirates. This was on a Pentium 90 over clocked to 130. The Genre is good but game play is the same from fighting to sailing to how the story is told.
Other titles that I have played off line is Pirates, both the old and the new by sid meyer. Sea Dogs, and Tourtuga. On Line Pirate style games where Century voyage and now PIRATES OF THE BURNING SEA.
(I have a "larger" amount of experience with on line games than average Joe)
What I liked about Pirates of the Burning Sea. was the Avatar Customization Which kinda made me feel like I was playing Evrquest 2 which is GOOD. I did like the open ended Quest type of set up. Skilling up was a tad slow and the fighting (by sword) is clunky.
The game looks nice and the fact that you can change your threads (clothes) to a "frilly shirt"if you want is nice too. I made my Avatar wear orange tights with black stripes whist wearing a white long coat with orange patterns on the sleave. Clothing options are many and varied.. Game play was standard. Graphics where nice but not awesome. Character jobs or type where also interesting but I could not tell the difference whist actually playing them.. apart from actual ships to use. There was place of origin or ethnicity being Dutch, English, Spanish, or Pirate. then there where also 4 jobs too from navy merchant, hunter (well sort of) and Pirate.
Avatar movement thought towns was just terrible. UI usage was fine and looks like the Everquest model.
compared against Century Voyage it was neither here nor there to play and instances where identical to be in. experience leveling was vastly different. and the community was small when I was playing it .. (in game)
Sony is a backer and you know this means that they might at some time change the game so that noobs don't have to learn anything .. just like the way they Stuffed a few of their other game titles.
Value for money. Well apart from Century Voyage being free (at a base level) and feeling like a cheep version of everything pirate like and WoW. I still liked Century Voyage better. which is unfortunate cause this title seemed to have promise.
I recommend a "try before you buy" as the game has a 7 day trial , with a free download and upgrade of the game. I do not recommend to install from disk but just download the latest release... that is not long enough as it takes that long to actually "get into" the game. Support is by a community based forum that did offer me help when I needed it. Which of course is a good thing.
in short
Excellent Avatar creation and customization of clothing (from creation to in-game clothing swap).
boring in towns with terrible movement control.
Instances are nothing new.
Graphics are nice but no cigar.
good support via forum.
backed by Sony (always interesting either good or bad).
Hey! I'll have you know we were working on Pirates back before they were hot! Everybody else is just trying to steal our thunder. ;)

LOL!
Aw Joe. Sods, eh? The good news is, pirates are timeless classics.
Also, an expansion to include ninjas is always an option, right? ;D

I hope there's plenty of frilly shirts available in that game!

oh yes, there's got to be someone working on a ninja-themed game? come on, game geeks, get to work please!

Plenty of frilly shirts, plenty of stripey pants, plenty of hats with feathers. Fashion is a very big part of being a Pirate, you know. :)
We announced our upcoming Ninja MMO back on April 1st of last year. Look for Ninjas of the Forbidden City to hit beta Real Soon Now.
