Amazing, there stories of trampling, and ebay craziness, and greymarketeers in the Japan launch queues. Folks smashing PS3s in the launch queues. Drive-by queue shootings (non-fatal). Launch rations sold out.
Did anyone get one?
Makes me wonder. Is rationing a product just a really cunning marketing ploy, or do you think Sony genuinely had production issues? It's curious. I didn't expect the launch rations to not sell out - we'll see whether Sony have a success in their machine in a few months time - but it's amazing watching the craziness that people will go to in order to be part of the Event. Also, how many normal-looking people have $600-$2000 to burn on a machine that will be readily available at $499 shortly after xmas.
Weird.

I was lucky enough to have camped out for 8 hours in front of GameStop in October and secure a pre-order. Picked up my 60 gig unit on Friday and have been playing some Resistance these past 2 days. There's not a lot of launch titles I'm really interested in playing, but I did get Marvel Ultimate Alliance and popped a few others in my GameFly queue.
Even though I camped out on launch for the PS2 & Xbox 360, I would have never done that again this time around with all the news already leading up to yesterday and the anticipated chaos contributed by eBay scalpers. It's great to see that eBay has settled down to closing prices of around $1000 now, with supply flooded as it is.
My main goal was to have the system on hand, so that I don't have to worry about shipment issues when the really good games do come out. Maybe there'll be new units available every few weeks, maybe not. I don't see prices going down this fast, seeing as they're still losing $300 on each system.
I'm also picking up a Wii (pre-ordered) tomorrow too.

while sometimes one wonders about other launches, this time around i believe that the shortages are indications of real production problems. just the blu-ray drive alone limits production: i believe sony had to delay the launch of some standalone blu-ray players because all the parts were required for the ps3.

I don't know anyone who managed to get one, even if they tried. People've been all over Gears of War, though.
