One for Mark F, who's a giant ukulele nut, and also one for anyone who goes misty-eyed and pathetic at the sound of the Legend of Zelda theme. Like me. Downright floppy. It's embarrassing.

why are old video game theme songs so good compared to todays? is it simply my nostalgia making me think they're better? Or were they truly more memorable and better written?

Ahh a fine question, but I suspect it's your nostalgia at work, dear bigwig.
Although, having said that, I can't think of any bits of recent game music that I particularly enjoyed - oh, except WoW, which is nothing short of magnificent. There's one.
