"I blame the patriarchy"
The Geeky Feminist says:
I’ve been getting a bit fed up with all of the Guild Wars women dancing in their underwear, so I decided to call it out whenever I see it. This was my first attempt.![]()
Hoi, the GW outfits are pretty skimpy, hey?
Which reminds me, check out my new uber trousers and cloak, which in combination, it turns out, are bikini shaped.
Please. BLUSHING.
It's nothing short of embarrassing, like being caught in public with your skirt stuffed into the back of your tights (happens to everyone - I saw Sienna Miller in Agent Provocateur with Jude Law once, and her frou-frou gypsy minidress was firmly packaged into the back of her knickers. An AP helper had to point it out to her, at which point there was at least ten minutes of mortified squealing. All true.).
Hopefully the Felheart trousers to match that lovely belt there will be slightly less revealing...

Thought that you'ld actually gotten around to *playing* guild wars for a second there..

The strangest thing about WoW is that male characters get more and more boggled down (graphically) with gear the higher level they reach.
While female characters outfit seem to get more and more skimpy.
I am guessing the Blizzard artists are all male and have excess hormones.

Ah, They look similar to mageweave pants... I purposefully wore a robe that wasn't as good as my Grimlock vest while wearing the mageweave pants. Then I got tired of it and finally went on the AH to buy a damn pair of pants.

Well, those are lady Elementalists who have stripped down to their undies, but the one in the foreground is wearing all of her clothes.
I don't know what it is, but the female Elementalists have many of the skimpiest outfits in the game.

I'd hit that orc arse

May I suggest, then, some kind of modesty enhancing Guild Tabard? They cover a multitude of sins.
Also - skimpy undies. I dunno about you, but if I were a lady adventuress, slashing my way into deepest, darkest BRD, I'd be wanting something with more give, possibly in a nice sturdy cotton-lycra mix, to wick the sweat for those 'Arrrrg! Too many mobs! Run for it!' moments. Also, Really Good Support. I am constantly amazed by the heaving wonder that is my Lady Tauren busom, and wonder if my chest item was made by Rigby and Peller (...and for that matter, why two? and why on my chest? Shurrrly I am a cow, and they should be kind of at underbelly height, and fourfold?).
Also, my leet epixes should be a nice pair of comfy cotton utility slacks with extra pockets, and a sensible warm jumper. Not a chainmail bikini. It is a long time since I stopped wanting to be Kate Bush.

I love the Geeky Feminist. I'm always so happy when a new blog pops up analyzing games from a feminist perspective. Now we just need to infiltrate the game development industry.

I've met quite a few game developers, including many Blizzard staff, and I'm sorry to say that they ARE mostly 20-30 something year old men who stopped developing emotionally at about the age of thirteen.
I've had arguments about the sexist character designs, and they've justified their designs and E3 "booth babes" by saying that their audience is mostly young and male, and naked women sell games. Somehow, they never see the possibility of there being a cause and effect relationship there... I also don't think they give it much thought. They are so immersed in a particular culture that it mostly doesn't even occur to them to make female characters anything other than buxom and naked, and male characters anything other than fully covered testosterone-mutants.

That's a pretty sad state of affairs, that is.
Posted by: Brinstar | March 07, 2006 at 03:00
i hear every day from my guild mates how much more pleasing to look at their female characters are than their male ones. It creeps me out, and then they take off their armour and start dancing. freaks i tell you.
Lately the controversey in my guild has revolved around how female ranger boobs jiggle when using their bow. shoot me.

Have you noticed that the female characters' boobs bounce when they're carrying quest items and running? I only just noticed that a week or so ago, and I don't know if it's always been the case. It feels strange not to be aware of something like that. Press 'r' to auto run, and then press 'z' to make the camera face your character.

It does beg the question: Where do discerning orc gals go to get a proper bikini wax?

Oh, I can't find it, but I'm SURE I saw an interview with the lead graphic designer for the World of Warcraft characters, and she was a woman. Damnit though, can't find the article...

The female monk's butt is extremely realistic when it comes to walking slow or carrying items. It shakes way better then a real laffy taffy

I find that sort of offensive saying that the majority of males(which i happen to be a member of)are testosterone mutants....my character is a paragon and actually i would rather wear light looking armor rather than clunky armor...cuz quite frankly it just looks better than looking like you want to take the hulk on and rip him in two...and as for the female comment....ill admit im a guy and do find that sort of thing funny but there is a point where it becomes annoying...
